Rumelian sericulture in the Ottoman Empire

Sericulture activities are an important source of income for the Ottoman economy in weaving and cocoon production. when ottoman weaving is evaluted in point of sericulture activities ; while silk weaving was dominant from the fourteenth century to seventeenth century , after seventeeth century bast silk production mainly has increased the geography of Rumeli where the Ottoman Empire began to settle in the middle of sixteeth century has contributed to become one of the important centres concerning bast silk production and silk trade,both with its location on the trade routes and its climate conditions. Altough the Ottoman Empire focused mostly on silk in the weaving sector from the beginning it increased bast silk production in time due to the increase in thedemand for raw cocoon throughout the world and the silk embargoes as a result of the political conflicts with Iran . Thanks tothis bast silk produced by Ottoman Empire it has had a say in the world markets for many years. While cities for instance Bursa, Amasya and Tokat in, Anatolia stand out in silk production, the cities of salanica, Edirne, Tirhala and the city of Mora stand out in Rumeli Religion. While the amount of silk produced in the nineteenth century was sufficient for Ottoman Empire silkwarm diseases that emerged in France in 1857 and spread within Ottoman borders in 1860 decreased the production of Ottoman bast silk. This situation had a negative effect on Ottoman Empire, which received significant tax revenue from sericulture and whose ecenomy was already seriously deterioroted . Thanks to the incentives given by the Düyün-ı Umümiye Administration, which was established in 1881, decreasing production was tried to be increased
