Evaluation of conservation process the buildings belong to waqf (vakif) institution from the Ottoman period: The case of the Kemeralti mosques

Since the foundation of Islamism, having been an efficient system in Islamic societies, waqf (vakif) system has come until today growingly. The waqf (vakif) system aims to do charity without any limitation about time. Having been active in Ottoman period, this system gave an opportunity to build public constructions. The restoration of waqfs, which were built individually in Ottoman Period, was carried out under the responsibility of the society. The mosques which were built and restored within this concept have been left to the possession of General Directorate of Waqfs (Vakif) in Republic period.Today the studies in order to protect Ottoman period mosques is carried out under the responsibility of General Directorate of Waqfs and related Regional Directorate of Waqfs; under the control of Cultural Heritage Conservation Board (except Preservation, Implementation and Control Bureaus) by service industry. Within the limits which are defined by the legal regulations the studies in three different areas forms restoration and conservation system.Within the scope of the study, based on implementation restoration system is semtinized in three titles as before implementation process, implementation process and after implementation process. The procedures, which had been carried out for conservation regard to Ottoman Period Kemeraltı Mosques between 1965-2011, were semtinized and deductions were made on inoperative aspects of restoration system. As a result, within this study on Kemeraltı Mosques, it is aimed to create nonexistent source for studies that will be done for the conservation of Ottoman period waqf buildings.
