Poor and destitute girls in the Ottoman Empire: Control, improvement and education 1850-1920

This study deals with the attitudes towards the poor and destitute girls in the late Ottoman Empire. In other words, this study examined poverty through the poor and destitute girls in the late Ottoman Empire. This thesis mainly searches for two questions: What has been the impact of the poor girls on charities and the modern education institutions founded by the state? What does the state understand about poor and destitute girls' discipline? In this period, various communities and missionary schools with the state and municipalities aid to poor and destitute girls. These aids interpreted as accommodation, nutrition and educational activities in the thesis. This thesis, dealt with the poor and destitute girls' education not only as the process of schooling but also as the process this girls' discipline. Therefore, this study examined how poor and destitute girls maintain their lives, too.
