Investigation of the effects of vitamin d on bone implant fusing in rats feeding high fat diet after osseointegration

High-fat diet (HFD) can lead to deterioration in bone metabolism. In implant treatment, the health of the bone tissue is indispensable for bone implant connecction (BIC). The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of VitD application on BIC in rats fed with HFD for 3 months following a 4-week osseointegration period. Forthy rats were used in this study, 2.5 mm diameter and 4 mm long implants were integrated in the right tibia bones of the rats and waited for 4 weeks for osseointegration, after this the rats were divided into 4 groups: Control (n=10), HFD (N=10), HFD+Dvit (n=10), Dvit (n=10). CNT; No additional procedures were applied for 3 months. HFD and VitD groups, for 3 months respectively; fed with HFD, 12 µg/kg of vitamin D by oral gavage was administered 3 times a week. At the end of the experiment, implants with surrounding bone, blood serum, jaws and femur bones were taken for histological, biochemical and radiological (DEXA; jaw and femur) analyzes. There was a difference between the groups in terms of glucose, HDL, VLDL, triglyceride, alkaline phosphatase, calcium, phosphorus, BIC and peri-implant bone filling (p<0.05). Glucose of the VitD group was lower than the Controls and VitD+ HFD groups (p<0.05). The glucose of the VitD group was lower than the Control and VitD+ HFD groups (p<0.05). The HDL of the CNT group was lower than the HFD and VitD+HFD groups (p<0.05). HDL of the VitD group were lower than the HFD and VitD+ HFD groups (p<0.05). The VLDL, triglyceride and alkaline phosphatase of the Vit D+HFD group were higher than the CNT and VitD groups (p<0.05). The mean alkaline phosphatase of the HFD group was higher than the VitD group (p<0.05). Calcium, phosphorus, and BIC of the CNT group were higher than those of the HFD group (p<0.05). The peri-implant bone filling of the CNT group was higher than the HFD and VitD+ HFD groups (p<0.05). Based on the limited results of this study, HFD may adversely affect osseointegration and vitamin D may treat this adverse effect.
