The metabolic syndrome prevalance in patients with osteoarthritis and the effect of metabolik syndrome on quality of life in patients with osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a joint disease characterised as focal areas damage to the articular cartilage, changes in subchondral and marginal bone, synovitis and capsular thickening. Obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes and resistance tend to cluster into the so-called metabolic syndrome (MetS). The aim of this study to examine the frequency of the metabolic syndrome in patients with osteoarthritis and investigate the effect of MetS (+) quality of life for this patients.In this work, 150 patients with OA, which they mathch the criteria of the American College of Rheumatology criteria, were participated. And the presence of MetS components was examined according to the Adult Treatment Panel III-National Cholesterol Education Program 2001 specifications: High waist circumference, low high-density lipoprotein, hypertension, hyperglycemia and hypertriglyceridemia. To determinate the quality of life Nottingam Health Profile (NHP), Short Form?36 (SF?36), Western Ontario and Mcmaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), Lequesne (knee and hip) index, for pain assessment, global assessment, functional assessment Visuel Analog Scale (VAS) and 100 meter walk time score were performed for each patient.Eighty for (%54,7) patients has MetS. There was statistically significant difference for vocational strain VAS score, 100 meter walk time score, NHP physical activity and fatique subscales scores, SF-36 physical activity and role-functioning subscales score between the patients MetS (+) and MetS (-) (p < 0,05). For the other scales there was not significant difference between the groups.In conclusion because there was increased MetS prevalance in OA and MetS was effected to quality of life negatively, it must be considered to MetS in patient with OA.Key words: Osteoarthritis, metabolic syndrome, quality of life
