Sound of the other: Discoursive analysis of Kürdish music in the context of the relation of power and music

Music is the mirror of culture. The music, as the mirror of culture, narrates completely the daily life in a society. As a matter of course, In this grand narrative (music), It is possible to see the social problems and What some social groups think about those social problems. Music clearly has politics within itself. Because music is encumbered with political economy. To figure out the politics within music It is necessary to uncover the musical code. To uncover the musical code, at first, It has to be analyzed the relationship between the social groups which are represented by musical forms, instruments, songs and the political power. After that the musical code can be truly explained with analyzing the musical discourses. In Turkey, quite a while, the Kurdish music has been object of musical othering. It is so clear When the Kurdish music has been analyzed as a "musical other". The nonuse of the instruments incidental to the Kürds and the censorship on Kürdish language and Kürdish music are indicative of these circumstances. In conclusion When looked for musical discourse of Kurdish music, It is mentioned that the concepts of freedom and equality and the "othering images" have openly gained dominance. In this study, critical theory and qualitative way have connectedly used. In case, In the study, alongside of literature survey, qualitative wording and discursive analysis method have connectedly used, as a research method.
