The effects of coaching mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder on their teaching skills and their children's acquisition of safety skills

The study investigated the effects of coaching mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder to use the behavioral skills training intervention and the effectiveness of behavioral skill training intervention on teaching safety skills to their children. The participants were three children with ASD, aged between 6-13 years, and their mothers. The researcher formed mother-child dyad in the study. The researcher used a nested multiple probe desings ascroos mother-child dyads. The study included baseline sessions, mother training sessions, intervention sessions, generalization and maintenance sessions. Findings showed, coaching the mothers was effective in teaching mothers to use the steps of behavioral skills training correctly. In addition to that it was effective in promoting maintenance and generalizition of the acquired steps of behavioral skills training intervention. At the time, the behavioral skills training intervention was effective in teaching safety skills to children with ASD. Last but not leastly, the findings that was acquired from mothers showed mothers found the study as socialy valid in general.
