The effect of toy and book library based read and play family education program on family child reading and play behaviors

The aim of the research is to study in an independent public preschool with socioculturally disadvantaged parents and children; The aim of this study is to examine the effect of the Read and Play Family Education Program on parent and child playing and reading books, based on the Toy Book Library created in cooperation with researchers, universities and non-governmental organizations. Literature review and expert opinion framework system in the Read Play Family Education Program; The developmental characteristics of the three-five year old period, the importance and criteria of children's picture books, the classification of dialogic reading sections, and the growing issues of playing between parents and children were touched upon. In the Read and Play Family Education Program, group meetings, individual interviews, discussion, sampling, comparison, narration, etc. techniques were used. The effects of face to face and online to parent education, which lasted a total of 7 hours in 7 weeks, are included. A parallel mixed design, one of the mixed research methods, was used in the study. In the quantitative phase, a single-group, unpaired, pretest-posttest pattern was used. In the qualitative phase, the document review method was used. In the research, 15 of the records of people between the ages of three and six registered in the 2022-2023 education and training program were determined as the study group and the criterion-based method was adopted. Pre-test and post-test data were collected using the good procedures of the research, the Child-Parent Joint Reading Activities Scale and the Play Participation Survey Form. In quantitative data, Mann Whitney U was used to analyze continuous variables such as gender, education level, and income level by groups, and Wilcoxon Signed Rank test was used in temporal comparison analysis as a pretest-posttest of rating scores in general and group rankings. The data of the qualitative dimensions consist of video recordings of play and reading performance with 5 to 15 children. It was analyzed using the document analysis method presented in the videos. As a result of the research, it was revealed that parental education had an impact on children's ability to play and read books with their children. The results obtained from this research suggest that education, especially for children with low socioeconomic status, can be expanded, toy and book warehouses can be opened in preschools, and more scientific research can be conducted on both the play and reading progress of growing children.
