Implementation of sustainability principles on toy design: Wooden toy case study

The subject of this thesis is determining the principles that are used on toy design and implementation of these principles on wooden toys. Initially, play, the context toy is involved in, was analysed in terms of meaning and purpose. As a result of this analyse, critical changes happened over time was explored and the effects of these changes on toy was revealed. In this context, the phases of the toy in time were discussed under the topics of social and technological history. The effects of the present situation of toy on humankind and environment were examined. Then, the meaning and the context of sustainability which is emerged towards environmental impacts that are life-threatening, were studied. The relationship between sustainability and design involved in this context was explained, the principles and criterias of sustainable design that are laid by the experts and researchers in this field are examined. The approaches and strategies that are developed for implementation of sustainable design were explained. In the light of principles, criterias, approaches and strategies obtained through the research, specific principles for toy design were developed. Finally the implementation of sustainability on wooden toy design was assessed by comparing these principles with the data gathered from market research.
