Expectations of the families (parents) with special needed individuals from the special education and rehabilitation center

The purpose of this study is to determine the expectations of the families (parents) with special needed individuals from the special education and rehabilitation center and the variables related to those expectations. The study gains importance by guiding the families who have not yet registered in any education center and, ensuring the institutions to make regulation according to the specified expectations and, leading the specialist and other personnel who educate and, assisting the institution administrators who want to respond to those expectations. The study is constituted by the families of the children with special needs who are attending the special education and rehabilitation centers resided in the city iv center of Kocaeli. The 285 special needed individuals who are attending the 3 special education and rehabilitation centers, which are currently operating , are forming the examples of the study. The survey prepared by the researcher was delivered to 285 parents, but 81 mother and 81 father filled and returned the survey. On the data analysis, for the purpose of evaluating the expectations of parents from special education and rehabilitation centers, the frequencies and percentages of the answers to the survey questions prepared by the researcher were calculated. The analysis of variance technic was used to designate if the families? age, education and the kind of disability of their children have any effect on their expectations from the special education and rehabilitation centers which their children are attending. In consequence of the study, as to the ages of the mothers who have special needed child, it is seen that there are considerable differences among the answers given to the part about the characteristics of the guiding and counseling services provided by the special education and rehabilitation centers which their children attend. In respect of the education of the parents who have special needed child and the children? disabilities, there are also considerable differences among the answers given to the part relating to their expectations about the physical conditions of the special education and rehabilitation centers. As to fathers? education, it is once more found that there are significant differences among the answers given to the part of the education provided by the special education and rehabilitation center which their children attend.
