An investigation of self-compassion levels of the relatives of palliative stage oncology patients in terms of psychological resilience and quality of life

Abstract (EN)

The main purpose of the study is to investigate if there is a significiant relation between palliative stage cancer relatives' self-compassion levels and psychological resilience, quality of life, depression, anxiety and stress. The study sample consist of 72 patient relatives (39 female, 33 male) who received palliative support in Istanbul University Oncology Institute in 2019.The research data obtained through Sociodemographic Form, Self-compassion Scale, Psychological Resilience Scale for Adults, The Caregiver Quality of Life Cancer Scale, Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21. Chi-square analysis, One- Way ANOVA, Pearson correlation and multipl stepwise linear regression analysis were used to respond the question of this research. Correlation analysis revealed that all relations between psychological resilience, depression, anxiety, stress, quality of life and self-compassion were significant. According to the results of the stepwise regression analysis, psychological resilience and quality of life significantly predict to self-compassion, but depression, anxiety and stress levels did not play a role in predicting the level of self-compassion. In addition, the relation between sociodemografik characterictics and variables in this study was examined. The only sociodemographic characteristic that significantly affected self-compassion was identify as the status of receiving assistance in care. The feature that has a significant effect on psychological resilience was the status of receiving information support, and the effect on quality of life was found that the support patient relatives received was sufficient. The results of the study were discussed in the light of the literature and the suggestions, limitations were stated.
