The effect of osteoporosis education on osteoporosis knowledge level and daily life in parkinsonian patients, randomized controlled trial

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of osteoporosis (OP) education on OP knowledge level and daily life in Parkinsonian patients. Hypothesis: To Parkinsonian patients; there is a statistically significant difference in terms of impact on OP knowledge level and daily life between giving informative brochures about OP alone and providing structured OP education in addition to the brochure. Material-Method: 54 participants aged 50 and over with Parkinson's Disease were randomized to the study and control groups. The OP education was performed in groups of 4-5 people by a single physician in the form of verbal expression via slide, with a duration of 20 minutes and in the form of a single session. Our brochure contained the same information as the OP education program. Patients were evaluated with 2 structured face-to-face interviews at the entrance and 12 weeks later. Revised 2011 Osteoporosis Knowledge Test (rOKT) (0-32 points) for OP knowledge levels; National Osteoporosis Foundation daily calcium intake scale [NOF, (mg)], Physical Activity Scale For The Elderly (PASE, 0-763 points), smoking and alcohol use status (Yes/No) and quantities (cigarette pack/per week, alcohol unit/per week), frequency of falls (times/last 1 month) were questioned for effects on daily life. Results: It was observed that both methods had a positive effect on OBT (p<0.001) and NOF (p<0.01). Training with the brochure was not superior to the brochure alone (p>0.05). In the Study Group, a significant increase in leisure activity levels (p<0.05) and a significant decrease in the amount of cigarette (p<0.05) and alcohol (p<0.05) consumption were observed. In comparison of the last test values of the groups, only the frequency of falls was significantly different and was less in the study group (p<0.05). Conclusion: Both methods had a positive effect on OBT and NOF and there was no significant difference between the methods. The education provided with the brochure had positive effects on leisure activity level and the amount of cigarette-alcohol consumption. In terms of the frequency of falls, the education provided with the brochure was superior compared to the brochure alone.
