Abstract (EN)

Intra-party democracy is related to several factors including the perception of democracy of political party leaders, structure of the political party, level of institutionalization, structures defined in its constitution and political culture of the society.Wheras democracy is defined as rule of many over few, the oligarchic structure inside a political party can be described as contrary to democracy, being rule of few over many. I have developed this hypothesis influenced by the Iron Law of Oligarchy of Robert Michels, stating that in each party and organization there is an inevitable oligarchic structure. I have asked this question: Is Michels?s Iron Law of Oligarchy structuralist or determinist, or is intraparty oligarchy a result of internal division of labour, subjective structure of the party administration, organizational and democracy culture based on the symbolic interactionist theory? The political parties shall demonstrate an example of the political structure in their internal organization that they would create in the society in case of their electoral victory. Otherwise, those who can not internalize democracy can not implement this on country level. We can not expect political parties who do not believe in democracy and who do not implement democracy in their internal functioning, to work for democracy in the society. As parties are institutions of democracy, they must be among the first ones to show a democratic structure. This research project is on analysing the intraparty democracy tradition with its present problems, finding out the reasons of the emergence of Iron Law of Oligarchy in political parties, analysing the problems and conflicts based on the examples of AKP(Justice and Development Party) having its roots in culture of religious community, CHP (Republican People?s Party) having its roots in elitist statist tradition and MHP (Nationalist Movement Party) based on leader, structure and doctrine ideology.Key words: Democracy, Political party, Intra-party Democracy, Iron Law of Oligarchy, AKP, CHP, MHP
