Turkish adaptation of pathological buying screener and examination of the pathological buying according to sociodemographic variables

Pathological buying is the behavior that causes individuals psychological, social and financial problems, and individuals experience difficulties in controlling their behavior. The purpose of this study was to examine the validity and reliability of Pathological Buying Screening which is developed by Müller, Trotzke, Mitchell, Zwaan ve Brand (2015) into Turkish culture and to examine the sociodemographic characteristics of pathological buying. 457 adult participants (286 females, 170 males and 1 non-binary) between the ages of 18 and 64 (M=33.17, SD=9.62) participated in the study. In the first part of the study, Pathological Buying Screener was adapted to Turkish and psychometric properties were analyzed. In order to test reliability, Cronbach's Alpha internal consistency coefficiency and test retest reliability were examined. Also, in order to test validity, construct validity, concurrent validity and criterion related predictive validity were tested. The results showed that Pathological Buying Screener were found to have good validity and reliability characteristics in Turkish culture. The second part of the study, the socio-demographic characteristics of pathological buying were examined. The results showed that pathological buying behavior did not differ according to gender. The prevalence of pathological buying behavior was found as 5.4% in the study sample. The findings were evaluated and discussed in the light of the literatüre.
