The retrospective evaluation of cone-beam computed tomography findings of odontogenic cysts in pedodontic patients

Abstract (EN)

Odontogenic cysts develop from the epithelium of dental structures and usually grow slowly. In pediatric patients, cysts generally grow faster and it is more difficult to predict the behavior of cysts. The purpose of this study is to investigate the distribution of odontogenic cysts according to gender and age groups, to determine the characteristics of cysts with KIBT datas in pedodontic patients apply to Gaziantep University Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Oral Diagnosis and Radiology for some kind of dental problems and to compare these data with previously obtained other datas. A total of 42 odontogenic cysts (radicular, dentigerous cyst and odontogenic keratocyst) were evaluated retrospectively in pedodontic patients aged 7-18 years (15 female, 27 male). Cysts were examined statistically in terms of age, sex, anatomical location, height, width, depth, scalloped boundaries, relation to inferior alveolar nerve, perforation and expansion of cortical bone, extension to maxillary sinus, relationship with impacted tooth or teeth, root resorption, perforation of the maxillary sinus, narrowing of the nasal airway and resorption from the nasal cavity. The males (%64.3) were the majority and radical cysts (%54.8) were found more frequently than dentigerous cysts (%23.8) and odontogenic keratocysts (%21.4). Odontogenic cysts in the age group of 13-18 years (%71.4), showed frequent localization of mandibular anterior (%33.3). The mean age was at least the dentigerous cyst (12.5) and the most the odontogenic keratocyst (15.11). %100 of the dentigerous cysts were unilocular and scalloped border was %0. In keratocytic odontogenic tumors, scalloped border was %100 and the root resorption in related teeth was %0. Knowledge of the distribution and properties of odontogenic cysts in pediatric dentistry will help dentists diagnose these lesions during clinical and radiological examinations and make appropriate treatment planning.
