Dr. Azmi YALÇIN May 2004, 172 pages Performance appraisal activity, which covers the determination of employee efficiency and success level is one of the most important function of human resource management. Regardless of the size or the field of activity of the company, the main purpose of the performance appraisal is to increase the performance and the efficiency of the employees. The importance of performance appraisal activities increased in recent years due to organizations' need for qualified workforce to be successful in a competitive environment. These activities are more important in hotels and other companies in the service sector, where the business success mainly depends on the employees. Performance appraisal activities contribute both to employees' personal development and organizational development by establishing communication system within the organization. Therefore, to improve the productivity of employees and to provide the continuity of this improvement, labor-intensive hotels need efficient performance appraisal system. The purpose of this study is to reveal the performance appraisal activities and diagnose their applications in five star hotels in Turkey.
