Investigation of the effect of monocyte / HDL and monocyte / lymphocyte parameters on the stage of the disease and prognosis in peripheral facial paralysis

Objective: To investigate the contribution of monocyte / HDL and monocyte / lymphocyte ratios to the inflammatory process, the severity and prognosis of the disease in patients with peripheral facial paralysis. Material and method: A study group was formed with 48 (19 Female / 29 Male) patients diagnosed with peripheral facial paralysis who applied to our Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery clinic between January 2018 and June 2020. In addition, the study was designed retrospectively by forming a control group with 45 patients (19 women / 26 men) who underwent elective surgery in our clinic for other reasons. The hematological parameters obtained from the blood tests of the patients in the study group at the time of admission were statistically compared with the values in the control group. Results: The MHO value of the study group was 12.85 ± 1.02, while the MHO value of the control group was 12.37 ±0.88, and it was found to be statistically significant. No statistically significant difference was found between other compared parameters (MLO, NLO, PLO). A positive correlation was found between the MHO value and the House-Brackmann stage at first admission to hospital. In addition, we found that the NLR value of cases with pathological enhancement in the facial nerve was higher and statistically significant in MR images compared to those without. We were unable to comment on the prognosis as all patients had improved. Conclusion: High MHO value in patients with peripheral facial paralysis supports the role of inflammatory and ischemic processes in etiopathogenesis. In order to make exactly comments about the prognosis, it is necessary to study these inflammatory parameters with multi-center series with larger patient groups in whom recovery cannot be achieved.
