SUMMARY THE EFFECTS OF MANDIBULAR 3. MOLAR TEETH WITH PERICORONITIS ON SALIVARY TOTAL ANTIOXIDANT / OXIDATIVE LEVEL AND OXIDATIVE STRESS INDEX Fatih ÖZDEMİR Doctoral thesis, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Supervisors: Prof. Dr. Metin GÜNGÖRMÜŞ, Prof. Dr. İnci Rana KARACA April 2018, 79 Pages Pericoronitis can be defined as the inflammation of soft tissues surrounding a partly sustained tooth crown. Research conducted in recent years shows that reactive oxygen species are associated with the pathogenesis of many inflammatory diseases and play an important role in tissue damage. Nevertheless, there have been no studies evaluating the relationship between pericoronitis and oxidative stress, although there have been very different studies on pericoronitis. For this reason, this study was conducted to determine the oxidative stress levels of patients with pericoronitis mandibular third molar teeth and to compare them with healthy subjects. A total of 53 people were included in the study, 26 of whom were pericoronitis and 27 were healthy. Total antioxidant level (TAS), total oxidant level (TOS) and oxidative stress index (OSI) levels were measured biochemically and the obtained data were statistically evaluated. As a result of the analyzes made, there was no significant difference between the groups in terms of TAS levels (p> 0.05), the salivary TOS and OSI levels of the pericoronitis patients were higher than the control group and there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups (p = 0.001). In conclusion, it is concluded that pericoronitis-associated individuals have higher salivary TOS and OSI levels than healthy individuals and that chronic pericoronitis may cause oxidative stress in the borders of this study. . Key words: pericoronitis, antioxidant, oxidant, oxidative stress
