The evaluation of relationship between periodontal disease, atherosclerosis and oxidative stress markers

Atherosclerosis, one of the important components of cardiovascular diseases, and periodontal diseases, a common global problem, are two major factors that negatively affect the quality of life. Oxidative stress is among the key factors that play a role in the process of inflammation. The aim of this study is to investigate whether atherosclerosis has any effect on the course of the periodontal disease by looking at the levels of the total oxidant level (TAS) / the total antioxidant level (TOS) in both of the patient groups, whether periodontal disease, which is a treatable disease, increases the severity of the atherosclerosis table, and how systemic oxidant / antioxidant status is affected when the two diseases exist together. The study design was formed of 4 groups with 20 subjects in each group; systemically healthy periodontally healthy (S), systemically healthy with chronic periodontitis (KP), atherosclerosis periodontally healthy (AS), chronic periodontitis with atherosclerosis (AKP). Clinical periodontal parameters of the patients included in the groups were recorded, and blood and saliva samples were taken from the patients. TAS / TOS, OSI levels in the samples were examined biochemically. When the clinical periodontal parameters were evaluated, it was observed that atherosclerosis did not affect the clinical periodontal parameters. When the biochemical parameters were evaluated, it was observed that oxidative stress parameters were affected in the presence of only atherosclerosis in serum samples or only chronic periodontitis, and oxidant/antioxidant status is affected more severely in the coexistence of both diseases. It was concluded that TOS levels of the saliva parameters, which are more local indicators than serum parameters, were affected only by the periodontal status, and that the OSI levels are at a lower level than all the groups in the S group. In the light of our study, it can be pointed out that atherosclerosis is likely to be a secondary inflammatory burden on the individuals with chronic periodontitis although there is no direct relationship between atherosclerosis and chronic periodontitis in terms of clinical parameters. However, randomized controlled multicentre studies are needed in this area. Key words : Atherosclerosis, Periodontal disease, Oxsidative stress, Total oxidant status, Total antioxidant status
