Abstract (EN)

This study, named "Late Roman Period Terra Sigillata Workshop in Northern of Phokaia" examined the terra sigillata ware from this workshop and of its kiln belonging to the Late Roman Period found during the excavations between 2009-2011 in İsmetpaşa District Phokaia (Island No. 1056, Parcel No. 13). The aim of this study is to analyze, identify and introduce the forms of the ceramics. The terra sigillata ceramics within the scope of the thesis, spans the time between end of the 4th to end of the 7th century A.D. In the 3rd floor of building in this area (the Late Roman Period), the presence of a large ceramic workshops in the area shows itself. The large water wells in the area is filled during this period and converted into Red Slip Terra Sigillata ceramic kiln. In this study, total 217 pieces of Red Slip Terra Sigillata were examined in 10 different groups. These as well as decorated amorphous pieces and unclassified forms were examined in two separate groups. Consisting the various size of bowls and plates forms for every type (Form 1 to 10) and decorated pieces, we have watched J. W. Hayes classification. These terra sigillatas by comparing to the similar sigillatas and considering the level of founds was dated. In addition to every form, was evaluated and settled in its chronological span through general development schema. These ceramics gives the information about the Late Roman Period Phokaia production of form, decoration, clay and slip properties. At the same time as local productions of this period reflects the fashion forms and decorations.
