Histopathological effects of picibanil injection to thenazal turbinates

Nasal obstruction is the first symptom of many diseases of the nose. Hypertrophyof the inferior turbinates is one of the most common causes of nasal obstruction. The purpose of this study, is to examine histopathological effects on the turbinates of OK-432, that administered to the nasal turbinates and to create an alternative to the traditional treatment methods that used in hypertrophyof the nasal turbinates. The study was carried out on 21 adult male New Zealand type rabbits and these were randomly divided into three groups. Group I (n=7) were administered 0,2 cc OK-432 to the subject's concha nasalis ventralis, group II (n=7) were administered 0,5 cc OK-432 and Group III (n = 7) were used as control group. 21 days after the application, subjects has been decapitated and bilateral concha nasalis ventralis of subjects were excised. Preparations prepared from them were assessed in terms of; loss of cilia, increased submucosal vascularity, loss of goblet cells, inflammatory cell infiltration, fibrosis and epithelial damage by light microscopy. Groups compared with each other in terms of loss of cilia, loss of goblet cells and epithelial damage were statistically insignificant (p>0.05), in terms of inflammatory cell infiltration, increased submucosal vascularity and fibrosis; statistically significant difference was found (p<0.05). In our study, OK-432 administered in turbinates, loss of cilia, loss of goblet cells and epithelial damage were mild, while increased submucosal vascularity, inflammatory cell infiltration and fibrosis found significantly higher. So we consider that the use of OK-432 in hypertrophyof the nasal turbinates may be alternative to the other treatment. Keywords: OK-432, nasal turbinates, nasal obstruction, hypertrophy
