Investigation of antibacterial and antioxidant propertiesof Platanus orientalis L. (eastern plane) plant extracts

Abstract (EN)
Plants are living organisms that contain a large number of bioactive compounds. Plants have very important functions in terms of the phytochemicals they contain. In this study, the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the extracts of different parts of Platanus orientalis L. such as branches (bark), leaves and cones (fruit) obtained with water, ethanol and n-hexane solvents were investigated. From the three different parts of the plant a total of 12 raw extracts including 3 units (Group-1) in ethanol with the cold infusion method, 3 units (Group-2) in water, 3 units (Group-3) in ethanoland 3 units (Group-4) in n-hexane with the soxhlet method were obtained and numbered. Then, the solvents were evaporated at 40 oC under vacuum with the help of a rotary evaporator, and the extracts were stored at +4 oC for analysis. The phenolic compounds of ethanol and water extracts (Group-1, Group-2 and Group-3) and the fatty acid composition of the nhexane extracts (Group-4) were determined by U-HPLC-MS/MS (High Pressure Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) and GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) analysis, respectively. The pesticide content of the three different parts of the plant was determined by GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS. Antioxidant effects of all extracts against free radicals were determined by the antioxidant activity determination methods DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazil) test, total flavonoid content (TFC) test, and hydroxyl radical scavenging-deoxyribose test. Antibacterial activities of all extracts were determined by Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Enterococcus feacalis ATCC 29212, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC 13883 bacteria.
