Abstract (EN)

Introduction and Objective: We examined the frequency of pleural effusion and aimed to contribute to the literature by examining the association between the presence of pleural effusion and 1-month mortality by analyzing the demographic, clinical, laboratory, and radiological features of patients with pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE). Materials and Methods: We analyzed the reports of Computed Tomographic Pulmonary Angiography (CTPA) of patients with pulmonary thromboembolism in reports added to our study at Dicle University Faculty of Medicine Hospital between January 1, 2017 and February 10, 2023. We excluded the patients with lung cancer, heart failure, pneumonia, and thoracic trauma. We compared the datas of patients with pleural effusion and those without. We retrospectively examined the association of PTE and pleural effusion with 1-month mortality by examining patient files in our hospital's patient data recording systems. Results: In our study, 206 patients who met the inclusion criteria were included. The average age of the patients was 61.29). 107 (51.9%) of the patients were women and 99 (48.1%) were men. The most common blood group in patients with PTE was A+. The most common clinical form of PTE was submassive embolism in 57.8% of the patients. Pleural effusion was detected in 71 (34.5%) of the patients. Pleural effusion was bilateral in 36 (50.7%) of the patients with pleural effusion. When the size of the pleural effusion was examined, the effusion was seen to be minimal in size in 38 patients (53.5%). Larger pleural effusions were observed in patients with PTE under the age of 65. Pleural effusions were observed to be larger in patients with massive PTE. It was observed that pleural effusions seen in patients with pulmonary thromboembolism did not increase the risk of 1-month mortality. Conclusion: More than half of the pleural effusions in patients with pulmonary thromboembolism were bilateral. The amount of pleural effusion was higher in patients under 65 years of age and in patients with massive PTE. Pleural effusions secondary to pulmonary thromboembolism did not increase 1-month mortality.
