Structure and theme in the novels of Pınar Kür

In this thesis titled "Structure and Theme in Pınar Kür's Novels", although biographical elements are mentioned, the main purpose is to reveal the general nature of the structural elements of the novels produced by the author, to reveal the author's view of life, art, which is formed within the framework of the author's novels and philosophical views in terms of content and to examine the themes that reflect the spiritual, intellectual and sociological features presented in Pınar Kür's novels. The fact that her novels are multidimensional in terms of both structure and content, have rich approaches, narrative techniques and philosophical/intellectual depth, has been the reason for limiting the scope of the thesis to novels. In the study, the author's eight novels titled "Tomorrow Tomorrow", "Little Actress", "The Woman to be hanged", "Unfinished Love", "A Novel of Murder", "Last Autumn", "Faculty of Murder" and "Sadık Bey" determined the scope and limit of the study. In the first chapter of the study, the elements that played an important role in the formation of the author's artistic personality were discussed, and information that would contribute to the reader's better evaluation of the author and her novels was presented. In the sub-headings of this section, details are given and her family life, education life, literary and business life and works are primarily introduced. The eight novels, whose titles are given above, have been presented to the reader in detail with a broad perspective, and the general story, plot, characters and themes of each novel have been determined and their artistic and structural lines have been presented by associating them with the author's writing adventure. In the chapter titled "Structural Elements in Pınar Kür's Novels", the structural elements of eight novels that form the scope of the thesis are discussed. In this section, firstly, each novel is introduced and the identities of the novel are presented with a structuralist perspective. The point of view, the identity of the narrator and the narrative techniques, which are the main elements of the novel, were first discussed theoretically, and then the novels that fit the definitions and classifications were examined together with their causes and results. Again, how the concept of time, which is one of the main elements of the novel and narratology, is used has been examined for each novel and the connection of the studies with the theoretical knowledge has been established. The concept of space, which is perhaps the most emphasized and related to human identity, emotional world, imagination, maturation process from childhood to adulthood and old age, and identity construction, has been handled with its special dimensions. Examining the connection of the place with the characters and themes of the novels has also formed one of the important discussions of the thesis on how the motivations of the novel characters, the emotional and sensory turmoil they experience in their inner worlds, their spiritual breaks and changes, their cultural, intellectual and spiritual selves and personalities are constructed in the novels. In the chapter titled "Language and Style in Pınar Kür's Novels", the analysis is handled under two main sub-headings as "Narrative Techniques" and "Narrative Forms". As narrative techniques, "internal monologue", "dialogue", "internal analysis", "narrating", "demonstrating", "depicting", "summarizing", "retrospection", "stream of consciousness" and "leitmotiv" techniques were explained and presented first. In the eight novels within the scope of the thesis, how they are used and what kind of richness they add to the content are analyzed. On the other hand, because of the presence of both modernist and postmodernist elements in Pınar Kür's novels, the expression styles used by both movements or which can be unique to either of them are processed. The main thesis of the study titled "Structure and Theme in Pınar Kür's Novels" is that Pınar Kür wrote novels in both modern and postmodern styles. Sometimes she synthesizes thought, sometimes she makes psychological analysis. She creates personalities both in the social context and by revealing the inner worlds of fictional characters. Technically, she is someone who writes novels sometimes with diachronic and sometimes with temporal flashbacks. As postmodern techniques, she uses "metafiction", which can be defined as the narrative of the narrative or the fictionalization of the fiction, and "intertextuality", which can be defined as the structural, thematic, intellectual or formal imitation, reuse or evocation of old texts. Although postmodernism has features such as breaking the truth, undermining the perception, ambiguity, doubt, playfulness, fragmentation of history and time, which try to break up the main elements of the classical novel and expose the reader to the alienation effect, such a purpose is not clearly seen in Pınar Kür's novels. By making use of the richness of postmodern fiction in terms of technique and form, she includes these elements in a way that contributes to the enrichment of the fiction, the more comprehensible characters, the reinforcement of the ground of intellectual discussion and the consistency of the emotional dimension. Although the thesis study only focuses on Pınar Kür's novels, it is a study that we think will make a significant contribution to the field as it is the first comprehensive study that deals with structural elements, narrative techniques and forms, and themes in the light of modern and postmodern concepts and theories.
