Abstract (EN)

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the periodontal status and dental caries lesions using thiol / disulfide homeostasis parameters as an indicator of oxidative stress in women of early reproductive age who were recently diagnosed with different phenotypes of PCOS. Materials and methods: This prospectively designed case-control study included 116 PCOS cases and 90 healthy volunteers, aged between 18-24, who were admitted to the gynecology policlinic between April 2018December 2018. All PCOS patients were subdivided into four phenotypes based on clinical, biochemical analysis and ultrasound according to the guidelines of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Phenotype A: Clinical or biochemical hyperandrogenism (HA) + chronic ovulatory dysfunction (OD) + polycystic ovarian morphology (PCOM); phenotype B: HA + OD; phenotype C: HA + PCOM; and phenotype D: OD + PCOM. Oxidative stress was evaluated using the thiol/disulfide parameters. Number and classification of dental caries were made using decayed, missing, filled teeth index and 'The international Caries Detectin and Assesment System' criterias (ICDAS II) and periodontal status were evaluated in all participants. Results: Pocket depth (PD), a periodontal parameter, was higher in all subphenotypes of the PCOS group compared to the control group. Conclusion: In conclusion, we found in the early reproductive period, pocket depth was found to be high in all phenotypic subgroups of PKOS. We think that this finding shows the importance of the initiation of oral health examinations that allow early diagnosis of periodontal diseases in PCOS cases in early reproductive period.
