Evaluation of angptl 3, 4, 8 and oxidative stress parameters in different body mass index (BMI) groups of patients with polycystic ovary syndrome

Abstract (EN)

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common female disorder in women of reproductive age. PCOS is a highly heterogeneous endocrine disorder characterized by hyperandrogenism, oligoovulation or anovulation and polycystic ovary; its pathogenesis continues to be debated. In our study, we aimed to investigate the role of obesity and fat metabolism in the pathogenesis of PCOS. Women of reproductive age (19-44 years) who were admitted to the Gynecology and Obstetrics outpatient clinic of Afyonkarahisar Health Sciences University Application and Research Center were included in the study. Thirty volunteer women diagnosed with PCOS according to Rotterdam 2003 diagnostic criteria were included in the subject group and 30 healthy volunteer women were included in the control group. These two groups were divided into 3 subgroups as normal weight, slightly overweight and obese according to the World Health Organization (WHO) body mass index (BMI) classification. The age and BMI distributions of the subjects included in the patient and control groups were compatible with each other. After 8-10 hours of fasting, height, weight, fat, muscle, water and body mass index values of all participants were measured with Tanita BC-601 device and waist circumference and hip circumference were measured with a tape measure and waist/hip ratio was calculated. Fasting glucose, HOMA-IR, CRP, HbA1C, ALT, AST, GGT, Total Cholesterol, LDL, VLDL, HDL, Triglycerides, Insulin, TSH, T3 and T4 were measured from serum samples obtained after 8-10 hours of fasting. In addition to routine blood parameters, ANGPTL 3, 4, 8, omentin-1, leptin, TNF-α and IL-6 levels were measured. Waist/hip and CRP levels were significantly higher and omentin-1 levels were significantly lower in the PCOS group compared to the control group. Waist/hip, HOMA-IR, CRP, fasting insulin and triglyceride levels were significantly higher and ANGPTL 8 levels were significantly lower in the normal weight PCOS group compared to the normal weight control group. In the mildly overweight PCOS group, waist/hip, CRP, triglyceride and ANGPTL 3 levels were significantly higher, HDL, ANGPTL 8, omentin-1, leptin, IL-6 and TNF-α levels were significantly lower than in the mildly overweight control group. HDL, leptin and IL-6 levels were significantly higher in obese PCOS group compared to obese control group. ANGPTL 4 and 8, omentin 1, leptin, IL-6, TNF-α levels of obese PCOS group were significantly higher than non-obese (normal weight and slightly overweight) PCOS group.
