The relationship between plasma viscosity and condition of JAK2 V617F mutation in patients with polycythemia vera Polycythemia vera is one of the chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms, collectively characterized by clonal proliferation of myeloid cells with variable morphologic maturity and hematopoietic efficiency. Polycythemia vera is distinguished clinically from the other myeloproliferative neoplasms by the presence of an elevated red blood cell mass. Also a history of venous or arterial thromboses is common in polycythemia vera. High levels of plasma viscocity is one the reasons of these thrombotic complications. Plasma viscosity designated by macromolecules like fibrinogen, immunglobulins and lipoproteins. Fluidity of the blood decreases in any condition that causes high levels of plasma viscocity. It has previously been reported that plasma viscosity is valuable and can be a surrogate marker of erythrocyte sedimentation rate, fibrinogen and the other acute phase reactants. It is not affected from, hematocrit, white blood cell and thrombocyte values. In this study we aimed to measure plasma viscocity of the patient with polycythemia vera, which is important risk factor trombosis. Patients are classified into two subgroups as JAK2 V617F mutation positive and JAK2 V617F negative patients. A total of 60 patients were enrolled in the study of 31 were JAK2 V617F positive and were negative. After 5 cc venous blood sample was drawn in all patients, separation of plasma by centrifugation accomplished. Plasma viscocity values measured by Brookfield DV– II + Cone Plate Viscometer (Brookfield, Stoughton, MA, USA) device. Also we have evaluated the fibronogen, albumin, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, c-reactive protein, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and total protein levels in patients We did not find any statistical difference among the groups in the view of plasma viscosity. Plasma viscocity values in JAK2 V617F mutation positive patients and JAK2 V617F mutation negative patients were found to be as follows; 1,089±0,126 mPa.sn and 1,098 ± 0,111 mPa.sn (p=0,782). According to findings of this study, there was no relationship between plasma viscocity levels and condition of JAK2 V617F mutation in polycyhtemia vera. In correlation analyzes; fibrinogen is correlated with plasma viscocity in the two groups (r=0,30, r=0,15). Also erythrocyte sedimentation rate is correlated with plasma viscocity in the two groups (r= 0,230, r=0,272). In conclusion we were unable to demonstate the relationship between plasma viscocity and conditon of JAK2 V617F mutation in patients with polycyhtemia vera. This study shows us plasma viscocity is affected from espacially including fibrinogen and other acute phase reactans.
