Examining identity construction in popular culture and contemporary art

The representation of social gender and identity plays an important role in contemporary cultural products, including media, art and literature. In this sense, studies in this area play a crucial role in understanding gender roles in society, identity formation processes, interpersonal relationships and power dynamics in life. Understanding these dynamics not only enables an in-depth analysis of contemporary Turkish social life, but also provides the opportunity to understand interpersonal disagreements, conflicts and struggles within the evolving collective lifestyles. In this context, this study also aims to examine and analyze the forms of representation that emerge in the identity formation processes of individuals in Turkish popular culture. The analysis separately examines the traditional gender representations in Turkish historical dramas and the works of renowned contemporary artists known for their liberal approach to social gender. These two different approaches are then compared with each other in terms of their results. Thus, the aim of this research is not only to understand how social gender norms are reflected in the tools of mass communication and how these norms influence individuals' perceptions of gender, but also to understand how visual arts confront these norms with their power and how individuals exist with their unique identities. Consequently, this study employed a qualitative research methodology that draws on the insights of numerous theorists and thinkers in the field of representation and semiotics. The study consists of two main parts, analysis and interpretation, and draws on various disciplines such as cultural studies, heroism and art history to deepen the understanding of the topic.
