Abstract (EN)

This MA thesis discusses the current signification of the authoritarian populism approach, which was born as a reply to the crisis that capitalism has been undergoing in 1970s. Authoritarian populism conceptualised by Stuart Hall and Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies is considered as an attempt to organize a populist participation and consent to anti-statist discourse of current neoliberal transformation process.Furthermore, this thesis tries to understand whether populism has developed as a solution to democracies? crisis. The nexus between populism and democracy consists an important problematic point in the scholarly literature. The main reason of that is related to the fact that both of these concepts are firmly related to ?people? and ?people?s political representation?. The thesis questioned the actuality of authoritarian populism via the link between populism and democracy and argued that this perspective provides an explicative framework for Turkish politics. This thesis offers authoritarian populism as an analytical means to make a critical analysis of the prismatic image created by the AKP government in popular perception in both senses, democratic and authoritarian; and to discuss the hypothetical conflict between democracy and the actors of regime of tutorship, as well as the quality of the transformation of State obscured by this.
