Abstract (EN)
SUMMARY Poststroke Dementia: The Prevalence and Risk Factors The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of poststroke dementia and its possible clinical and sociodemographic risk factors, three months after the index stroke episode. Among 147 patients who had been hospitalized in Neurology inpatient clinics of Dicle University Faculty of Medicine with a diagnosis of stroke, 106 of them were included in this study as they could be reevaulated three months after the index episode. All patients underwent a detailed systemic and neurological examination and a detailed form including information about sociodemographic features and, vascular and non-vascular risk factors of stroke was completed for each patient. Detailed cardiac evaluation, routine laboratory examinations including complete blood count, blood glucose, lipid blood levels and other parameters, were also performed. All patients were scanned with cranial imaging (CT or MRI) in their initial stroke and the results were noted. Functional, clinical and cognitive status of all patients were evaluated at the time of hospitalization and three months after if they could be reached via Barthel index, NIH stroke scale (NIHSS) and Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE). The results of this study showed that 32 of 106 patients included in the study (30.2 %) were diagnosed as PSD. The comparison of patients with and without PSD revealed that patients with a diagnosis of PSD were elder and more commonly women. Patients with PSD" had more atrial fibrillation and previous stroke history than the ones without. No significant differences were found between these two groups in terms of other vascular and non-vascular risk factors including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, blood lipid levels, alcohol use and smoking. Patients with PSD 53had more lesion in brain scanning than other group. As a conclusion, this study has approved that PSD is a common complication of stroke patients. Early recognition and treatment of risk factors for developing PSD, will definitely lessen the burden of stroke on society and help in improving the life quality of patients.
