Unconscious processes and narrative planes in Belgian art in the context of postmodernism debates

In the tension between the unconscious and the subjectivation processes, everything that cannot be expressed by language and which is foreseen to be repressed by the determinations of the symbolic is pushed to the unconscious. In the world of these determinations, the subject cannot make sense of certain things belonging to the essence of being, so these are constantly repressed. According to Freud, these "repressed" forms the contents of the unconscious processes. Also, Lacan treats the unconscious as "return of repressed" but evaluates it as a void within the symbolic with the Real. The Real is a self that is beyond language. In fact, the unconscious, for example, appears as a symptom. Because the roots of our existence are hidden there. But these roots are beyond our discourse. They are apprehended as trauma because they cannot be identified in the language. In today's postmodern period art, this study has been prepared to explore the effects of unconscious processes through Belgian artists and to make these effects visible. Artists such as Tuymans, De Cordier, Borremans, De Boe and De Bruyckere make visible in their works indescribable or unspeakable formations that have been repressed to the unconscious beyond the boundaries of the language. These artists, who construct images to make indistinct and disappear within each other such as Real and reality, subject and object distinctions, apply to the creative, uncanny and perverse powers of the unconscious. They are indifferent to the symbolic in order and they open up to non-subjectivity processes to experience the mystery and the impossible as intensive flows and affectivity. This experience is for incorporating a piece of Real or the Thing into the symbolic. But the unconscious is what keeps the subject alive as well as frightens him with uncanny. While the works of the artists are approched with a psychoanalytic, philosophical and aesthetic reading, in the light of these readings, they are analysed from the traumatic, uncanny and perverse perspective that the language cannot grasp within the symbolic order. Because the images of artists enable to produce scenes that point to the pathological fragility and sensitivity of the subject, transform the unconscious processes and integrate the psychic structure with our being, and keep alive the openness of the unconscious to experience and sense the essential consistency of our existence.
