The effect of powerpoint software on educable mentally retarded students' reading comprehension skill

In this research, reading material prepared with PowerPoint software aimedat determining the effects of reading comprehension skills on educable mentallyretarded students.In the research, a reading material was prepared in PowerPoint among othercomputer softwares in order to develop reading comprehension skill of educablementally retarded students and with the aid of reading material subjects?improvement processes of reading comprehension levels was examined.In this research AB desing model which is one of single-subject designmodel of AB desing models was used. Subjects in the research were 3 educablementally retarded children attending one of the state primary school and beingdependent on integration education. The research was carried out in two levelsincluding start-level data collection and application level. In start-level andapplication level in order to get data a material determining the level ofunderstanding the read vocabulary item, vocabulary cards, a means determining thelevel of understanding the read vocabulary item, sentence reading cards, a materialdetermining the level of understanding the read sentence, individual reading texts, ameans determining the level of understanding the read text were prepared and used.In this research reading comprehension skill, understanding vocabulary,understanding sentence and text were conducted under these sub-headings. Datacollected were interpreted with graphical analysis.In the light of the very data, the material that the visuality is essential makesthe student concretize the word, sentence and the text. The very property of thematerial simplified the interpretation of the word, sentence and the text read. It isthought that the use of the reading material prepared with PowerPoint in order toimprove the reading comprehension skills in the learning environment may be useful.Besides it is also thought that it will increase the participation of the students in thespecial education due to the outstanding reading material. Consequently, it wasdetermined that reading material prepared with Power Point improves the veryreading comprehension skill.Key words: PowerPoint software, educable mentally retarded students , readingcomprehension.
