The effect of the program based on the precede-proceed model, "I AM giving up smoking,Ii am protecting my future and MY health program", on smoking behavior of nursing students

Objective: This study was conducted to determine the effect of the I am giving up smoking, I am protecting my future and my health program based on the Preced-Proceed Model on the smoking behavior of nursing students. Method: The research is a quasi-experimental study in two groups in the order of pretest-posttest-follow-up. The implementation of the research was carried out with nursing students studying at a university between October 2021 and April 2022. Ethics committee, institutional permission and informed consent were obtained from the students. The study was conducted with 80 nursing students, 40 of whom were intervention and 40 were control groups. The intervention group I am giving up smoking, I am protecting my future and my health program was implemented. Smokers Diagnosis Form, Individual Information Form, Behavior Change Process Scale, Decision Balance Scale, Self-Efficacy/Efficacy Scale, Encouraging Factors Scale, Classification of Stages of Change Scale, Fagerström Nicotine Addiction Test were used in data collection. Wilcoxon, ANOVA, Dependent groups t test, ANCOVA analysis and eta-square value were used. Results: Interventions made in I am giving up smoking, I am protecting my future and my health program increased the behavior change, self-efficacy, and health perception level of the students in the intervention group compared to the control group; The level of decision-making decreased the benefit dimension, the level of incentive factors, the level of nicotine addiction and the number of cigarettes (p<0.05), and 12 people (30%) from the intervention group quit smoking. Conclusion: I am giving up smoking, I am protecting my future and my health program had a positive effect on the smoking behavior of nursing students. It is recommended that randomized controlled studies in which this program is applied should be conducted by measuring the CO level and this program should be implemented in health centers.
