Association of the histopathology of placenta and placental bed biopsy with serum adiponectin levels in preeclampsiaObjective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the histomorphology of the placenta and the plasental bed biopsy and to correlate this with serum adiponectin levels in preeclampsiaMaterials and methods: Thirty- two women with preeclampsia were compared with uncomplicated pregnancies. Twenty placental bed biopsies from preeclamptic pregnancies were compared with 12 from normal pregnancies. After birth the placentas were collected. Plasental bed biopsies were obtained at caesarean section with direct visualization of the placental site. The placentas and placental bed biopsies were examined for uteroplasental vascular pathological features. Serum adiponectin levels were measured by an enzyme-linked ELISAResults: There were no significant differences between the two groups with regard to serum levels of adiponectin. Adiponectin levels were not lineerly correlated with the histopathology of placenta and placental bed biopsies in both groups. However, a significant increase in adiponectin level was observed in preeclamptic women with a placental histopathology score 6, when compared to score 0 (31.5 vs 15.3, p<0.04). Compared with controls, scores of histology of placenta and placental bed biopsies were significantly higher in women with preeclampsiaConclusion: These data suggest that concentration of adiponectin is not predictive of placental histologic pathologies and placental bed vascular lesion in preeclampsia.
