The effect of two different methods used in intravenous procedures on pain, cardiorespiratory parameters and comfort in premature babies

THE EFFECT OF TWO DIFFERENT METHODS USED IN INTRAVENOUS PROCEDURES ON PAIN, CARDIORESPIRATORY PARAMETERS AND COMFORT IN PREMATURE BABIES The aim of this study was to determine the effect of lullaby and position of mother voice used during invasive procedures on premature infants on pain, cardiorespiratory parameters and comfort. The study is a randomized controlled experimental study. The number of samples was calculated by power analysis. The study was completed with 30 premature newborns including 10 premature newborns to each group. Data were collected by using the Descriptive Information Form, Patient Follow-up Form, Newborn Comfort Behavior Scale, Newborn Baby Pain Scale and SNAP-PE II Scoring System. Data were analyzed using SPSS statistical package program. Mean, standard deviation, median, minimum and maximum values were used in descriptive statistics and percentage values were used in discrete data. All descriptive characteristics (gender, diagnosis, mode of delivery, birth pain and height, gestational week, and APGAR score) were homogeneous except for the present variable. When the groups were compared in terms of pulse and oxygen values in the invasive procedures, it was found that the pulse values of the prematured newborns in the lullaby group were lower and the oxygen saturation values were higher than the control and position groups, and these differences were statistically significant (p<0.005). There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of respiratory values (p>0.05). In terms of the mean score of the newborn comfort behavior scale, the mean score of the lullaby group was lower than the control and position groups and the difference was statistically significant (p<0.05). The mean score of the newborn infant pain scale just before the invasive procedure, during the procedure, immediately after the procedure and 10 minutes after the procedure was found to be higher in the control and position group than in the lullaby group and this difference was statistically significant (p<0.05). The evaluations made by the two researchers for the neonatal infant pain scale and the neonatal comfort behavior scale were found to be consistent with each other. The lullaby of the mother's voice and developmental supportive position is an effective method in decreasing the pulse in invasive procedures, increasing oxygen saturation, reducing pain and increasing comfort, and in the invasive procedures, the lullaby listening with the mother's voice is more effective on cardiorespiratory parameters, pain and comfort levels.
