Abstract (EN)

Introduction and Objective: Obesity is a chronic disease with many complications and its prevalence is increasing all over the world. Obesity can be classified according to clinical, etiologic, body mass index and fat cell number / volume increase. Body mass index is widely and practically used. Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) is one of the chronic pain syndromes characterized by pain and severity of pain in certain areas of the body, with widespread body pain at the forefront. Although FMS occurs at any age, it is most commonly seen in the 40-60 age range and is 9-10 times more common in women. Its prevalence is reported to be between 2-8% (20). Obesity can also be seen with certain rheumatic diseases.There have been some recent reports regarding the association of fibromyalgia syndrome and obesity. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of obesity on fibromyalgia syndrome in premenopausal women. Material and Method: The study was conducted on 52 obesity patients admitted to Abant İzzet Baysal University Training and Research Hospital Internal Medicine Department outpatient clinic and 51 healthy individuals who accepted to be included in the study for routine check-up. Body mass indexes were calculated by weight and weight evaluation. The patients were divided into two groups as obese and non-obese according to their body mass index values. Data werecollected through a face-to-face interview with 103 female patients, 52 of whom were obese (Body Mass Index ≥30 kg / m2) and 51 were non-obese (Body Mass Index <30 kg / m2). The questionnaire was prepared based on literature. The first part included the socio-demographic characteristics of the patients, the second part included the examination findings for the sensitive points of the participants and the last part included the Fibromyalgia Effect Questionnaire (FIQ). The validity and reliability of our country have been made by Sarmer et al. Therefore, no special permission was required for the use of the questionnaire. ix The participants were evaluated according to the ACR 2010 FMS classification criteria and accepted as fibromyalgia syndrome. Findings: The mean age of the participants was 33.42 ± 10.41, the mean weight was 79.65 ± 19.91 and the mean BMI was 30.52 ± 7.75. While the smallest participant was 18 years old, the largest participant was 56 years old. 26.2% of the women participating in the study had a known disease; 73.8% had no known disease. 13.6% of the women participating in the study were diagnosed with diabetes mellitus type 2; 9.7% had essential hypertension and 5.8% had hypothyroidism. While 25.2% of the women were diagnosed with Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS); 74.8% were not diagnosed as FMS. The participants were evaluated according to the ACR 2010 FMS classification criteria based on the questioning of regional pain points and somatic symptoms and diagnosed as FMS. The mean age of the obese (38.48 ± 8.95) was greater than the mean age of the non-obese (28.25 ± 9.26). The incidence of obesity increased with age (p˂0.001). There was no statistically significant difference between marital status, occupational distribution, smoking history and education levels in obese and non-obese groups (p> 0.05). There was a statistically significant difference between the results of Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire of obese, obese and non-obese women (p = 0.001). There was a statistically significant difference between the number of sensitive points on the Diffuse Pain Index Scale (WPI-WidespreadPainIndex) of obese women and non-obese women (p˂ 0.001). Discussion and Conclusion: The prevalence of Fibromyalgia Syndrome was found to be increased in obese women compared to non-obese women. Fibromyalgia syndrome is a chronic pain syndrome that affects the quality of life. In these patients, especially in the presence of obesity, the pain parameter may be affected more. Obesity, whose frequency is increasing in the world and in our country, causes more complications due to the increase in frequency. Key words :Fibromyalgia syndrome, obesity, premenopause.
