Effect of interleukin 31 andinterleukin 33 on osteoporosis in premenopausal and postmenopausal women

Objective: To investigate the effects of interleukin (IL)-31 and IL-33 on bone mineral density in the premenopausal and postmenopausal female population. Material and Method: This study was conducted between March 2022 and March 2023 on eighty-two female patients who applied to Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University Application and Research Hospital Gynecology and Obstetrics outpatient clinic and had DEXA performed for screening purposes in the last 6 months. Forty postmenopausal women were selected as the study group and forty-two premenopausal women were selected as the control group. Patients' background information, physical examination findings, laboratory values and The DEXA results were recorded from the files in our hospital system. IL-31 and IL-33 values of the patients were studied. Results: No statistical difference was detected between interleukin levels and other parameters of women with normal and decreased bone mineral density in the premenopausal and postmenopausal groups. However, it was found that there was an increase in IL-31 levels in women with osteopenia in the postmenopausal group, although it was not statistically significant. Conclusion: No relationship was detected between osteoporosis and cytokines involved in osteoporosis mechanisms, such as IL-31 and IL-33.
