Appearance of Catharsis that psycho-ethic phenomenon in music

ABSTRACT This is the most important sentence that Aristotle used to explain catharsis; "The duty of tragedy is to ensure the sprit to purify from obsessions by its petition and fear (catharsis)." It is a phenomenon relieving the sprit at the end of a tragic external stimulator. In this project, it was focused on the reason of cathartic and how musical excternal stimulator effected. Catharsis may also be examined among stage arts, literature and drawing. In this study, it was examined for music. The study consists of three sections: Introduction (About Philosophic Base of Cathartic Phenomenon): In this section, the etimolohy and description of catharsis, the meaning in psychoanalysis, psychological and ethic reasons, and the relation with fate and religion. Section 1 (About Appearance in Music of Cathartic Phenomenon): In this section, the appearance of catharsis in music, epic music against cathartic music, catharsis in religious music and it was emphasized why music better descript the story when compared to drawing and sculpture. Section 2 (About Describing Melancholy With Musical Element): In this section, with spiritual process in tragedies, the comman points of spiritual process in cathartic music, melody, harmony, words and rhythm, and cathartic effect conflicts originated from unavailability of reducing mucis into words. This project defines catharsis, comprises theoretical frame on the appearance in music in order to be able to display the aspect of the relation with psychology and music. VI
