Examination of carpets in the collection of the Prof. Dr. Turan Yazgan Ethnographic Museum and transfer of motifs to textile design

The art of weaving is one of the branches of art that man has made to meet his needs throughout history. Carpet weaving is a branch of the art of "weaving", whose origin dates back to the centuries before B.C. It is also important to reflect our history and cultural values. Over time, the transition to fabricated production in carpet weaving causes hand-woven carpets to gradually disappear, losing their intrinsic value. Museums also play an important role in this context, mediating the transfer of culture in terms of protecting and storing crafts that are beginning to disappear. One of these museums is located in the province of Isparta Prof. Dr. Turan Yazgan Ethnographic Museum. In this research, it was aimed to determine the color, motif and composition characteristics of 44 carpets, which are woven as mats in places and exhibited in the museum, and to design souvenirs in order to make the traditional features of hand-woven carpets sustainable in line with the results obtained from these data. Among the carpets examined, it is seen that there are most base and head carpets in size, and the carpets belong to the region of Isparta, Ladik and Shirvan. It has been observed that wool is used in the weft and warp of 43 Spruce and Isparta carpets and cotton yarn is used in the loop. As a knot technique, it was determined that 42 of them were woven with an Iranian (Sine) knot and 1 with a Turkish knot. It was found that the Shirvan carpet was woven with a Turkish knot, using wool rope in its Weft, Warp and loop. It is seen that the carpets mainly use herbal decorations, and colors such as cream color, mustard yellow, mint green are most often used as colors. In the digital field, new souvenir designs proposed for sale in the museum were made using the colors and motifs of the carpets examined within the scope of the research, and some of the designs selected from them were made into products.
