Investigating the relationship between serum asprosin level with insulin resistance and other metabolic and hormonal parameters in prolactinoma patents

Abstract (EN)

Hyperprolactinemia, which is known as the oscillation of the prolactin hormone (PRL) higher than normal, is one of the most frequently encountered pathological condition among endocrinological examinations. The most frequently encountered type of pituitary adenomas which cause hormone hypersecretion are prolactinomas. It is known that the prolactin in the circulation changes the glucose-stimulated insulin secretion and glucose homeostasis by modulating the insulin resistance. Experimental studies have shown that PRL in adipose tissue affects the intake of food, the weight of the body and insulin resistance by inhibiting adiponectin and IL-6 production. Adipokines are bioactive molecules released from the adipose tissue and they play a crucial role in whole body homeostasis. Asprosine, a new adipokine with orexigenic effect that provides hepatic glucose output when hungry, is associated with insulin resistance. The purpose of our study is to investigate the relationship between serum asprosine levels and metabolic markers in healthy individuals with prolactinoma. The study includes a 30-person case group with a diagnosis of prolactinoma between the ages of 18-65 and a 30-person control group without a chronic disease history who applied to the Fırat University Medical Faculty Hospital Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases Outpatient Clinic. Fasting serum asprosin levels, biochemical parameters, anthropometric measurements and blood pressure were examined in all individuals. In our study, serum asprosine levels were found to be similar in the case and control groups. There was no statistically significant difference in asprosine levels between the case and control groups (p=0.911). Although the neck circumference of the case group was significantly higher than the neck circumference of the control group in anthropometric measurements (p=0.041), there was no significant difference in body mass index and waist circumference between the case group and the control group (p> 0.05). In conclusion, determination of serum asprosin in individuals with prolactinomas under treatment at a level similar to healthy individuals suggests that there may be improvement in metabolic markers such as decrease in prolactin levels with treatment. Due to the complex structure of human metabolism, studies that examine larger groups and more parameters are needed. Keywords: Prolactinoma, insulin resistance, asprosin
