The effect of automated thinking and eating behaviours of individuals with psychiatric diagnosis on metabolic syndrome levels

Özet (EN)

This study is a descriptive study aiming to determine the effect of automatic thoughts and eating behaviours on metabolic syndrome in individuals with psychiatric diagnoses. Since the number of individuals diagnosed with SCH, GAD, OCD, OCD, OOP, anxiety and depression who were followed up in Tokat Dr. Cevdet Aykan Mental Health and Diseases Hospital in the last year is known, the sample number required to be taken according to 95% confidence interval (1-α), 5% error level, 95% test power (1-β) and d=0.5 effect size was 241 people. The data were collected face-to-face between 20.03.2024-01.09.2024. Patient Identification Information Form, Automatic Thoughts Scale and Adult Eating Behaviour Scale were used to collect the data. Data Analysis of the data was carried out using SPSS v26 programme. The normal distribution of the data was checked with skewness and kurtosis coefficients. Independent Groups t test and One Way Anova parametric tests, Mann Whitney U and kruskallis wallis non-parametric tests were used. The relationships between variables were examined by Pearson correlation analysis and Linear regression analysis was used. In the study, 34.9% of the participants were between the ages of 18-27, 62.7% were male, 71% were single, 45.6% were high school graduates, 41.5% smoked less than 1 pack a day. 41.5% smoked less than 1 packet of cigarettes, 75.9% did not use alcohol, 94.6% did not use substances, 43.2% reported that their eating behaviour decreased when they felt negative mood, 53.1% reported that their eating behaviour decreased when they felt positive mood, 53.1% reported that their eating behaviour decreased when they felt positive mood.1% had increased eating behaviour when they felt positive mood; triglyceride level increased significantly as the score obtained from hunger subscale (β=0.155, p<0.05) and automatic thought scale (β=0.158, p<0.05) increased, HDL level increased significantly as the score obtained from hunger subscale (β=0.176, p<0.05), the HDL level increased significantly, the glucose level increased significantly with the increase in the score obtained from the food selectivity sub-dimension (β=0.134, p<0.05), the glucose level increased significantly with the increase in the score obtained from the satiety sub-dimension (β=-0.136, p<0.05), systolic blood pressure (SBP) level decreased significantly, emotional overeating sub-dimension (β=0.177, p<0.05) increased significantly, satiety sub-dimension (β=-0.172, p<0.05) increased significantly, waist circumference decreased significantly. Education and practice-based approaches such as regular risk assessment, healthy nutrition, physical activity and stress management are recommended for the prevention of metabolic syndrome.
