Examination of the relationship between emotional intelligence levels and empathy skills of psychology undergraduate students

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence levels and empathy skills levels in psychology undergraduate students between the ages of 18-35. 403 students from public and private universities in Istanbul participated in the research. In the study, the Revised Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale and the Empathy Level Determination Scale were applied to the participants. In this study, it was found that there was no significant difference in emotional intelligence scores according to gender. It was found that there was no significant difference in cognitive empathy, emotional response and social skill levels, which are empathy sub-dimensions according to gender. It was found that there was no significant difference in emotional intelligence levels according to age. It was found that there was no significant difference in empathy levels according to age. It was found that there was a significant difference in emotional intelligence levels according to the number of years the student spent as a university student. It was found that there was no significant difference in empathy levels according to the number of years the student spent as a university student. According to the class variable, it was determined that there was no significant difference in cognitive empathy and emotional response levels, but there was a significant difference in social skills level. It was found that there was a significant difference in emotional intelligence and empathy levels according to the university of education. It was determined that there was a positive and significant correlation between emotional intelligence and cognitive empathy, emotional response and social skills, and that empathy components predicted emotional intelligence significantly. For this reason, emotional response is expected to be related to emotional intelligence, and in the result obtained in this study, it was determined that there is a significant relationship between emotional intelligence and emotional response.
