Serum visfatin, adiponectin,TNF-? levels in patients with psoriasis and relation with disease severity

Psoriasis is a chronic, autoimmune and inflammatory disease of unknown etiology, characterized by T lymphocyte mediated keratinocyte proliferation. In recent years the relationship between psoriasis and adipose tissue cytokines has been reported. Psoriasis as a triggering factor for the immune and metabolic disorders can be associated with diabetes mellitus, abnormal lipid metabolism and metabolic syndrome. In this study we aimed to determine the adipose tissue cytokines TNF-?, adiponektin and visfatin levels in psoriasis patients and evaluate the relation between disease severity and cytokines.Our study was performed on total of 42 patients with make an application with psoriasis to Abant Izzet Baysal University, Medical School Dermatology Polyclinic and a group of 42 healthy individuals between February 2009-August 2009. TNF-?, adiponectin and visfatin levels were measured in patients diagnosed with psoriasis and a control group. Constant variables were compared using t test, and categorical variables were compared using chi square test. Relationship between TNF-?, adiponectin, visfatin, PASI score, obesity, duration of psoriasis was evaluated with pearson correlation testWhen serum TNF-?, adiponektin, visfatin levels of the patient group were compared with those of the control group, TNF-? levels were found statistically higher, adiponectin levels were found statistically lower; on the other hand, no significant difference was found in visfatin levels. As a result of pearson correlation test conducted with PASI scores, statistical significance was determined between PASI-TNF-? and between PASI-adiponektin.The results of our study showed that TNF-? and adiponectin play a part in psoriasis etiopathogenesis and can be markers to asses severity of the disease. Although there was no statistically significant difference in visfatin levels between control and patient groups, since higher mean levels of this in patient group were present we think visfatin might play a role in psoriasis pathogenesis which should be clarified by further studies.
