Evaluation of intestinal inflammation with fecal calprotectin level in psoriasispatients and its relationship with clinical, laboratory parameters, disease activity scales

Aim: Psoriasis is an immune-mediated chronic inflammatory disease associated with various comorbidities. In our study, we aimed to show subclinical intestinal inflammation using fecal calprotectin levels. Material and Method: Twenty-two psoriasis patients who received systemic treatment, 25 psoriasis patients who did not receive systemic treatment, and 25 healthy controls who applied to the İnonu University Faculty of Medicine Dermatology outpatient clinic were included in the study. Clinical anamnesis was taken, dermatological examination was performed. Routine tests such as ESR, CRP, and Hemogram were requested from all participants, gastrointestinal symptom assessment scale was applied, and fecal calprotectin levels were studied in stool samples by micro elisa method. Results: Although fecal calprotectin levels were higher in the patient group than in the control group, they did not show a statistically significant difference. Faecal calprotectin was found to be positive in 51% of the patients with psoriasis, but it did not show a statistically significant difference with the control group. Although fecal calprotectin levels were high in the patient group receiving systemic therapy, they did not show a statistically significant difference between the groups. There was no significant relationship between fecal calprotectin levels, PASI scores and disease severity.Conclusion: Although fecal calprotectin levels were found to be high in immune-mediated chronic inflammatory diseases such as ankylosing spondylitis, there is only one study in the literature that evaluated intestinal inflammation with fecal calprotectin levels in psoriasis patients. We believe that studies in larger patient groups are needed to better explain this relationship and should be supported by colonoscopy and histopathological examinations.
