Özet (EN)

Purpose: To investigate the role of systemic inflammation in the etiopathogenesis of pterygium growth using the values of Neutrophil / lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and Platelet / lymphocyte ratio (PLR), which are indicators of systemic inflammation. Materials and Methods: The study included 100 eyes of 100 patients who were systemically completely healthy and operated with the diagnosis of pterygium between February 2010 and February 2020 in our clinic. Preoperative detailed ophthalmologic examinations, surgical and postoperative data of the patients were analyzed. NLR and PLR values were calculated from the complete blood count samples taken before the surgery. In the control group, 86 eyes of 86 completely healthy patients who underwent strabismus surgery in our clinic within the same dates were included. Results: The mean age of the patients included in the study was 48.34 ± 12.15 (20-70) in the pterygium group and 29.36 ± 10.21 (20- 64) in the control group. 48 (48%) of the pterygium cases (n = 100) in the study were female and 52 (52%) were male. Of the 86 cases in the control group, 37 (43%) were female and 49 (57%) were male. 84 (84%) of the pterygium patients in the study group were primary pterygium cases, while 16 (16%) were recurrent pterygium cases. The mean NLR values of the patients in the pterygium group were 1.979 ± 0.774 (0.95 - 5.24), and the mean NLR values of the patients in the control group were 1.661 ± 0.356 (0.85 - 2.69), and it was found to be statistically significantly higher in the pterygium group (p = 0.002. ). The mean PLR values of the patients in the pterygium group were 127.38 ± 39.324 (53.55 - 229.45), and the mean PLR values of the patients in the control group were 114.9 ± 28.15 (63.64 - 176.67). It was found to be significantly higher in the ptergium group (p = 0.00013). Conclusion: NLR values and PLR values of the patients in the pterygium group were found to be significantly higher than the control group.
