Determining the efficacy of intravenous iron sucrose and intravenous iron dextran treatments on anemic patients in puerperium

Pregnancy and puerperium period have high risk for about anemia. Although oral iron replacement is given in pregnancy, anemia in postpartum period is frequent due to discontinuation to the treatment, losses to the fetus and also blood loss during labor. The aim of this study is to compare the efficacy of two different intravenous iron replacement regimenswhich are iron sucrose and iron dextran for anemic patients in puerperium. 100 patients enrolled in to the study. 50 of them had intravenous iron sucrose therapy and 50 of them had intravenous iron dextran therapy. When the efficacy of these treatment regimens is analysed, it was determined that both of these treatment modalities are effective forthe treatment of iron deficiency anemia in puerperium but there is no any difference between the efficacy of these treatment regimens. There was no any serious allergic reaction due to treatment. Only one patient who had iron sucrose treatment had skin eruption and pruritus. There was no any side effect in the other group which had intravenous iron dextran. İntravenous iron replacement is recommended as an alternative forthe treatment of iron deficiency anemia in puerperium due to disparity to the oral iron treatment and also to reduce the side effects of oral iron therapy.
