Determination of predictive values of mean platelet volumes in pulmonary embolism, acute myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke

Objective: Acute myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolism, ischemic stroke are common diseases with high mortality/morbidity. Early diagnosis and early intervention are important. The aim of this study is to evaluate the three disease groups together and to examine which disease affects the MPV value more and its clinical usability. Materials and Methods: In our study, adult patients diagnosed with ST segment elevation myocardial infarction, ischemic cerebrovascular event and pulmonary thromboembolism who applied to the emergency department of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University Training and Research Hospital between 01/01/2019 and 31/12/2020 were retrospectively analyzed. Age, gender, hemogram and troponin parameters of the patients were recorded. The obtained values were compared between the groups and the results were analyzed. Results: Our study was conducted on a total of 2 143 patients. Of the patients, 1 046 were diagnosed with STEMI, 258 with PTE, and 849 with ischemic SVO. When the three diseases were compared, no difference was found between the groups for MPV and PDW values (in order p=0.08, p=0.94). White blood cell, hemoglobin, RBC, hematocrit, platelet and troponin were found to be different between diseases (p<0.001). When groups matched by age and gender were formed, 246 people from SVO patients, 258 from PTE patients, and 227 from STEMI patients were selected. When the selected groups and healthy individuals were compared, it was seen that there was no difference between MPV values (p=0.10). Conclusion: When the three disease groups were compared, it was seen that there was no significant difference between MPV values and more studies should be done on this subject.
