ABSTRACTMSc ThesisEFFECT OF RADIATION ON CRYSTALLIZATION ANDMECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF GLASS-CERAMICSÖmer KAYGILIFirat UniversityGraduate School of Natural and Applied SciencesDepartment of Physics2005, Page: 139In the present work, the crystallization behavior and mechanical properties of the glass-ceramics before and after radiation were studied. Five different glass-ceramics samples wereprepared by melting the powders in a platinum crucible in an electrical furnace and cooled inthe air.Two samples were irradiated with gamma rays from an excitation source of 60Co at doseof 70 Mrad and one sample was irradiated by X-ray tube (Genius X-ray Tube, 135 kV, 150 mA,1s). The crystallization behaviors of the samples were investigated by means of X-raydiffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)and differantial scanning calorimetry (DSC). The hardness of glass-ceramic samples were testedby a Vickers hardness tester. Density of samples were measured by Archimedes method.The crystallization kinetic parameter of activation energy (E), the Avrami parameter (n)and mechanical properties of samples before and after irradiation have been calculated and alsocompared.Keywords: Glass-Ceramics, JMAK Kinetics, Crystallization, Mechanical Properties.
