Evaluati̇on sense of smell the pati̇ents recei̇ved radi̇otherapy wi̇th nasopharyngeal carci̇noma

In our study, to determine whether or not loss of sense of smell in nasopharynx cancer patients after radiotherapy and the effects of this on quality of life was aimed. Twenty-one patients received RT with nasopharyngeal carcinoma and 21 volunteers as healty control groups participated in the study. Ortonasal odor tests, scale of life quality, and MR imaging to measure olfactory bulb (OB) volume have applied in both groups.When we compared ortonasal odor tests and the scale of life quality among two groups, we found statistically significant difference . But OB volumes using MRI did not showed any statistically significant difference among two groups.We found the sense of smell did not change but patients felt reducing the sense of smell with subjective smell tests and scale of life quality and this effected their life of quality negatively. As a result, the patients should be given information before RT about can be reduced sense of smell after radiotherapy was concluded.
