The protective effect of vitamin e on oxidative stress caused by noise in rats

In this study, it was aimed to investigate the protective effect of vitamin E, which is an important antioxidant, against the oxidative stress that noise creates. For, this purpose, 21 male Wistar-Albino rats divided to 3 group, 7 in each group. These groups are; Group 1: As a control group, only placebo (corn oil) was implemented. Group 2 (noise): Rats were exposed to 8,000-9,000 hertz and 100 decibels intensity of voice for 10 hours a day for 30 days. Corn oil was administered as a placebo. Group 3 (Noise + Vitamin E): Rats were given Vitamin E (200 mg/kg/day) in corn oil by oral gavage in addition to noise. Vitamin E was implemented a week before noise exposure. Then, it was given 2 hours before noise exposure for 30 days. At the end of the study, rats were anesthetized at the end of fasting for about 12 hours and blood and tissue specimens were taken. Malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH) levels, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and catalase activities were determined from the obtained erythrocytes and tissue specimens. According to the results, erythrocyte and liver MDA levels were significantly increased in group 2 (p<0.05) due to the effect of noise, whereas in the third group given vitamin E, this increase was significantly decreased (p<0.05). The absence of a difference in the level of MDA between the control and the vitamin E-treated group indicates the protective effect of vitamin E. A significant decrease (p<0.05) in the liver was detected, although there was no difference in the activity of erythrocyte GSH and GSH-Px in the group exposed to noise. A significant increase in erythrocyte and hepatic GSH and hepatic GSH-Px (p <0.05) was also observed in the group given E vitamins. A significant increase (p<0.05) was noted in the group receiving E vitamins, although there was a significant decrease (p<0.05) in the activity of erythrocyte and liver catalase in the group in which noise stress was applied. There was no significant difference between groups in all parameters in kidney tissue. According to the findings of the study, it was determined that due to noise exposure in erythrocyte and liver MDA which is an oxidative stress indicator is increased and antioxidant parameters are decreased. While vitamin E reduced MDA levels, on the other hand, it showed a protective effect by increasing erythrocyte and liver GSH levels and GSH-Px and catalase activities.
